I think the quote at the beginning of this chapter is very fitting, – People see God everyday, they just don’t recognize him. – Pearl Bailey

Every day for me as well as for many of you can be very busy.  Yesterday, I had to get a replacement cell phone because my old one had been damaged.  When all of the information from my old phone had been downloaded into my new phone the first app that popped open was my calendar.  Just looking at it made me tired. Almost every single day had some kind of appointment, task or reminder listed.  Granted, in order to stay on top of things and to make sure we are not missing deadlines and important events, most people need an organizational tool and mine just happens to be the calendar on my cell phone.

However, after reading this chapter and having this issue with my cellular device, I can definitely see how a person could miss seeing and hearing from God in their daily lives.  God has this amazing ability to simply speak and make things happen.  From the very beginning, Genesis 1, the creation story establishes God’s power, majesty and wisdom as the Creator.  God’s voice has the power to change our lives and the very situation we’re in right now that seems impossible to get up and face each day.  When we connect to it and tap into it, God’s voice gives us the courage to overcome our fears, grow in our faith journeys and to truly become all that God has created us to be.

For each of us, hearing God’s voice may be a different experience.  For some it may be loud, for others soft.  For some it might be a feeling or fluttering of the heart, that voice in the back of your head screaming “no, don’t do that”.  However you hear God, be careful not to let rushing and busyness of your daily life block out God’s voice or make it hard for you to distinguish His voice from all of the other happenings going on inside your brain.  I can definitely hear God more clearly when I take the time to slow myself down.  I am a thinker.  It’s what I do.  Always thinking, always goal setting.  Always planning my next lesson for my students and therefore, my mind is always on.  It seems to never stop.  My closest friend is always telling me that I think way too much and I do.  And since I recognize this about myself, I have learned the importance of making sure that I spend a quiet time each morning in prayer and focused on God’s word.  I am also learning to meditate.  This gives me an opportunity to quiet myself for a few minutes throughout my day, to clear my mind of all the clutter and focus on what’s really important.

How do you know when God is speaking to you?  What is it like to be in his presence or to hear his voice?
