All Worth It

Writer: Rosetta MandisaRosetta Mandisa

My sister is an amazing human being. As far back as I can remember she has always been a caring soul. She truly loves and cares for her family and friends. If she is able, she will not hesitate to be there for us when we need her. For me personally, from the moment I entered this world she has taken it upon herself to see to it that I was taken care of. No matter where I was or what I was doing, I was always her responsibility. This was not a task that was forced upon her, we had parents, however, my sister has always taken her role as the big sister very seriously.

There have been times over the years when my sister and I have lived in different states, yet somehow or another we'd end up near each other again. We settled in Florida about twenty-eight years ago. For most of those years, we had our parents here with us. Unfortunately, time has claimed them, so, she and I have worked very hard to live a life that bears witness to their love, sacrifice, and dedication to family.

We look out for each other and take care of one another. However, being the youngest, my sister still goes all out for me not matter what. I have grown to know that I will forever be her "baby" sister and even though I am a full-grown adult, I will always be her responsibility. That's just the way it goes. So, when she got engaged last year, I knew that helping her with her wedding would be a small way I could give back to her for the many ways she has sacrificed and cared for me.

We spent the past ten and a half months pouring over ideas, colors, venues, invitations, chairs, flowers, dresses, shoes, and all the many, many things that go along with planning and executing a wedding. Since I have worked several weddings and events over the years, I convinced my sister to let me take the reins on her wedding. Without hesitation, she did. She trusted me wholeheartedly, with nearly every aspect of her wedding. Through many conversations, I took what said and put forth every effort to turn her vision into reality.

This past weekend, along with her wedding planner, I was able to celebrate an amazing wedding day with my sister and her now, husband. Seeing the smiles on their faces and the joy of their presence as they danced, laughed, and enjoyed their family and friends was worth every moment I spent planning her big day. For all that she has done for me, to be able to do this for her meant the world to me.

Thinking about her wedding day, even now, brings tears to my eyes for many reasons. The first being that I know without a doubt that my parents were smiling down on us that day. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. All of the guests had a great time. We literally started on time and stayed on time throughout the night. The second being that my sister was an absolutely gorgeous bride. She was truly stunning. And do you know that girl stayed in that bridal suite sipping mimosas, eating snacks, laughing and chatting it up with her bridal party without a care in the world. Not one time did she call or send for me to ask how things were going. She was able to really enjoy her day, and I could not have asked for more than that.

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs.! May God continue to bless you and keep you!
