Drive Safe

Whenever I have to leave my grandson at daycare, home or with a sitter, he always walks me to the door, gives me several hugs and kisses then tells me to drive safe. At four years old, I am certain he doesn’t understand where I’m going or how long I will be gone. I’m not even sure he fully understands what ‘drive safe’ means but somewhere along the way he picked it up and without fail says it to me every time I have to go
somewhere without him. Also, it’s not just me, he says it to others when he realizes that they are leaving him.
Drive safe, for me has become a simple yet powerful statement. Before my grandson came to live with us, I didn’t give much thought to my driving. As a forty-six year old grown woman, driving is something I’ve just done for more than half my life. Driving is simply something I must do to get to where I want to go. My grandson has changed my thinking. His ‘drive safe’ comment reminds me that I need to be careful and most of all aware when I am driving.
We are all aware of the daily accidents that happen on our roadways. Something as simple as going two miles down the street to the grocery store could result in a fender bender if you or the other driver is distracted in some way. Actual driving is just not something most of us give any real thought to. Now that I am responsible for this little person, I see that I need to be careful and do my very best to drive safe.
After my second grandson was born last year, I made a conscience decision to take better care of my health because I want to be around for both my grandsons for as long as I can. I understand that the only way I can do that is by taking care of myself and my body. As the great Les Brown say, “your wealth is in your health.” Therefore, eating right, getting proper rest and staying active have become a top priority for me. I guess I can add driving safe to last list as well.
From the mouths of babes…:)
