My Four Walls

Everyday all day we are surrounded by other people’s thoughts and opinions. All around us people are making decisions that will impact us in some way, shape or form. As this school year is set to begin for me, the governor is making decisions that effect my state. Those decisions are impacting my county, which impact my superintendent and school board, who then make decisions that impact my job. Each day my coworkers and I put our heads together to try and figure out how we will not only teach but also keep ourselves, our families and our students safe.
Last week, I went in to work at my part time job and my manager informed us that the store would be closing. The CEO’s and executives decided to file bankruptcy. Another decision that will impact me.
More decisions, more voices.
Sometimes there are so many voices that your own seems to get drowned out. So much so that you can’t even hear yourself think. Recently, I have spoken with several friends and family members who are stressed beyond words and struggling with increased levels of anxiety, sadness and depression. We are all, in some way, being forced to examine, rethink and reevaluate our lives in a different, deeper way.
Who will help us? What are we to do? When will this be over? Where are we to go? How are we to stay safe? We are trying to find answers to questions we probably never thought we’d be asking. However, here we are with decisions, voices, impact and questions pulling at us from all directions.

I have decided that while the world is swirling around me, there is one thing I can do to quiet the noise. I can focus on my four walls, a.k.a my house. I can only do what I can do, and what I can do is stand up and take care of what’s within my four walls. Within my four walls I will continue to trust God and pray for my family and friends. Within my four walls I will continue to read God’s word so that I can align my life, my decisions and my attitude to that of God’s. Within my four walls I will continue to examine, revisit and reevaluate my morals and my compass so that my direction is clear. I will continue to speak life and positive words to those within my four walls so that when we step outside of those walls we are strengthened in a way that will allow us to positively impact others as well as speak to others in a way that will encourage them and uplift them.
If by doing those things, we can help others quiet the noise and focus on what is truly important within their four walls, imagine the positive impact we can have on all the negativity this country is facing today?
We all have a choice…:)
