Sometimes It Just Takes a Woman

I think it is safe to say that everyone knows that women are strong and resilient beings. Most people are related to or at the very least know of a woman who has been tried, tested and come out on the other side stronger than ever.  Women work, take care of households, raise children, sometimes even raise their husbands, boyfriends, significant others and partners.  Women survive abuse, ridicule and the like.  Not to say that men don’t have to endure some things too, however, I am speaking from what I know as a woman and have personally experienced.

I have discovered that reading the bible can be a strange beast at times.  I have never been one that can sit and read the Good Book cover to cover.  I usually start some place and I may be there two or three days and then find my attention searching some place else.  I always feel as though I am getting fed what I need but I do bounce around A LOT!

That being said, I am excited to confess that I have somehow found myself back in the book of Second Samuel.  During this particular pass through, what has grabbed my attention most are the roles women played in helping some of the men written about become great leaders.  I am discovering that being a strong woman is nothing new.  We have been handling business for centuries!  The strength and resilience these women showed during a time when they were basically considered nothing more than lowly servants, nobody’s, is absolutely incredible.  As I am reading, I am thinking about the sheer panic, anxiety and fear they must have felt but knew, they just knew speaking up and speaking out was important.

So many of the women weren’t even mentioned by name.  They were listed as so and so’s daughter, sister, wife or concubine.  What’s in a name anyway?  It’s the impact that they made that was so great.  In Second Samuel 14, Joab sent someone to Tekoa to bring back a wise woman they wanted to use to get a message through to King David.  Joab told her exactly what to say when she went in to the King and she did as she was told.  However, she felt something wasn’t quite right and she shared her own piece of wisdom with the King.  The King took her advice.

So, as a woman, reading about brilliant, strong, resilient women who came before me, I can’t help but to believe that as a daughter of a King, that same brilliance, strength and resilience lives within me.

All you have is all you need…:)
