Wisdom’s birthday 2019

I thought about making a quick post on Facebook but then thought about the fact that my sweet puppy gave me sixteen of the best years of his life.  The least I could do was give him his own blog post!

Last night, the doctor asked me how I came up with Wisdom’s name.  No one had ever asked me that but everyone who knew Wisdom, loved his name.  When my son was born, I wanted him to have a name that was unique to him. I didn’t want him to be a junior or named for someone.  I wanted him to have a name that would power his individuality, strength and promise for the future.  So when Saleem and I got Wisdom, I wanted his name to be just as unique.  When the doctor asked me how I came up with Wisdom’s name, I explained to her that I always wanted to be reminded to be wise and just in how I treated people.  So, whenever I said Wisdom’s name, I was reminded to be kind to others, to be wise in my choices and just in my dealings.

Wisdom was more than that though.  He was an amazing pet to have.  He was about four weeks old when I connected with the lady who owned his litter.  There were eight in his litter and by the time Saleem and I arrived in Dade City to meet her, there were three dogs left to choose from.  One was female and two were male.  I knew that I didn’t want a female, so the owner let Saleem play with both boys to decide which would be the right fit for our family.  The biggest boy pup was rather wild.  He would not sit down with Saleem for anything.  The smallest of the litter was Wisdom.  Wisdom climbed up into Saleem’s arms and snuggled with him.  Saleem said, “Mom, this is the one!”

Four weeks later, we brought Wisdom home.  He’s been apart of this family for sixteen years.  He’s watched over and played with every child that has lived in this house and countless others that did not.  My parents loved him the most.  My dad, always joked that he couldn’t take Wisdom for a walk because, “what would the fellas think when they see me with this tiny, cute dog that couldn’t catch a raccoon?”  Once for about a month, I had to leave Wisdom with my parents because I was in the process of moving and I had to move out of one place before the other was ready.  When I dropped Wisdom off with my parents he was his average weight of six pounds.  By the time I picked him up a month later, Wisdom was ten pounds and it showed.

Of course, I asked my parents why my dog was now morbidly obese.  My mom just gave me a look.  My dad laughed and said, ” it’s ya’ momma’s fault!  She was making that dog pork chop sandwiches every night!”  I think Wisdom was mad at me for a long time for moving him from parents’ house.  After getting him back on normal dog food, the weight came off and Wisdom looked like himself again.  Every time my dad told someone the story about my mom feeding Wisdom pork chop sandwiches, he’d laugh from beginning to end.  I also found out that my dad did end up taking Wisdom for walks around the neighborhood.  They both loved spoiling their little companion.

Last night was hard.  Wisdom had developed a nasty infection.  He was feeling pretty down.  I wrapped him up and held on to him to help keep him calm.  After a while, I knew I needed to get him to the vet.  The doctor’s diagnosis was not very good.  We knew he was uncomfortable and in pain.  A decision had to be made.  No way was I going to let him suffer after all the joy he’d brought to us.  On video chat with Saleem, Wisdom turned his body toward the phone.  He knew Saleem’s voice.  Saleem said, “Mom, he looks so tired.”  I said, “I know.”  We said our goodbyes and Wisdom was able to rest easy.

He will be missed immensely as he brought so much happiness to our lives.  If I know my mother, I know he’s already had a fried pork chop sandwich and if I know my dad, he is somewhere laughing.

All dogs go to heaven…💔
